In his will, Joseph Appleby, tin toy manufacturer, directed his wife Harriet to continue his business until her death, after which time it should be passed to his sons William, Henry and John with the residue of his property to be divided between his nine children.  At his death, the gross value of his personal estate was valued at £928.5.0. After searching for years for burials for Joseph and Harriet, I was thrilled when DC discovered the Appleby family grave plot at the City of London Cemetery and Crematorium at Newham (see photos right) - Joseph is buried there, along with Harriet and several of their children.

Harriet NAY

Born 10 jan 1821 and christened 26 feb 1821 at St Leonard’s, Shoreditch.  Father William Nay, weaver of Hoxton Town, mother Ann.   (source Parish Records LMA)  In the 1841 census, Harriet was living in Haggerston with her parents (see next generation)

Harriet Appleby died on 7 dec 1897 at 28 Cambridge Circus, aged 77 years.  The cause of death was Bronchitis and exhaustion.  She was described as being the widow of Joseph Appleby, tin plate worker.  The death was reported by Emily Horne, her daughter, of 3 Kenilworth Road Bethnal Green, who was present at the death.  (source death certificate).  Harriet is buried with Joseph in the Appleby family grave at city of London Cemetery and Crematorium in Newham, along with most of their children. 

Known children of Joseph and Harriet Appleby :      

Joseph Charles/Edward Appleby (b 20 jun 1844, chr 14 jul 1844 at St Leonard’s Shoreditch) Married to Emma Hand Sudbury [1866 sep Bethnal Green 1c, 738].  In 1881 census was a tin plate maker employing 1 man and 10 boys, living in Hackney with five children.  Joseph died on 7 dec 1892 and he and his wife Emma Hand Appleby, who died 14 Apr 1919 and son Albert Hand Appleby (1884-1939) are all buried in the Appleby Family Grave.

Charles Edward Appleby (b 13 oct 1846 at 60 Seabright Street, Bethnal Green – father Joseph Appleby tin plate worker, mother Harriet Appleby formerly Nay (source Birth Certficate),  chr 9 nov 1846 at St Leonard’s Shoreditch)  was a tin toy maker.  Charles married Emily Ward in 1866 and they had 10 children – their son Albert, born in 1890, was grandfather of Clive Appleby.  When their daughter Emily was born in 1878 they were living at 44 Felix Street and father Charles was a tin plate worker (source DC) - Charles' wife Emily died on 5 Sep 1897 and Charles on 6 Nov 1917 and both are buried in the Appleby family grave.

William John Appleby (b 4 dec 1848 at 61 Squirres Street Bethnal Green, father Joseph Appleby, tin plate worker, mother Harriet Appleby formerly Nay (source Birth Certificate), chr 26 dec 1848 at St Leonard’s Shoreditch.  Although have not found him in either 1871 or 1881 census, in 1891 census William is still unmarried and working as a tin plate worker, living with his parents in Bethnal Green. In 1901 he was living with his married sister Emily Horne, along with his nephew Percy.  William Appleby died on 22 April 1909 at the London County Asylum Claybury in Essex.  In his will he left everything in trust to his nephew Percy Appleby until he reached the age of 21 (source William Appleby’s Will) William is buried at the Appleby Family grave in Newham.

Eliza Appleby (b 4 apr 1851, chr 27 apr 1851 at St Leonard’s Shoreditch)   Married to Samuel Chapman, a fancy toy warehouseman, [1879 dec Bethnal Green 1c, 478] and in 1881 they were living in Leyton in Essex with their son Samuel.  Eliza died 16 feb 1895 and is commemorated on the Appleby family grave

Harriet Appleby, born 14 aug 1853 and chr 4 sep 1853 at St Philip Bethnal Green, dau of Joseph and Harriet, tin plate worker of 61 Squirries St.  Married to William Friend, cabinet maker in 1874 and in 1881 census they had two children.  Harriett died on 15 jan 1892 and is commemorated on the Appleby family grave.

Henry John Appleby, born  21 july 1855 at 6 Squirries St, Bethnal Green  – father Joseph Appleby, tin plate worker, mother Harriet Appleby (formerly Nay) (source birth certificate DC) and chr 12 aug 1855 at St Philip Bethnal Green.  In 1881 he was also a tin plate worker. Henry Appleby died died 6 May 1891 aged 36 and is commemorated on the Appleby family grave 

Emilie Appleby, born 25 aug 1857 and chr 13 sep 1857at St Philip Bethnal Green, dau of Joseph and Harriet, tin plate worker of 61 Squirries St , married George Horne in 1878. [1878 dec Bethnal Green 1c, 563]  Emily Horne was the daughter who reported her mother’s death in 1897 (see above) George Horne and his partner Alfred Doubleday continued to run the tin toy factory W APPLEBY and Co after his brother in law William Appleby's death  (source DD).

John Appleby (b 15 mar 1861, chr 4 feb 1866 at St Leonard’s Shoreditch)    Married to Charlotte Lowry (see previous generation)          

Annie Appleby (b 6 jun 1866, chr 4 feb 1866 at St Leonard’s Shoreditch) In 1891 Annie was still living with her parents,  she died on 8 jul 1899 at 28 Cambridge Circus, Bethnal Green.  She was aged 33 years and a spinster, occupation housekeeper.  The cause of death was cardiac disease, 3years and the death was reported by her sister Emily Horn of 3 Kenilworth Road, Bethnal Green (source death Certificate).  In Annie’s will, she left her effects (valued at £207.14s.4d) to her son Percy, with her brother William Appleby, tin-toy maker as sole Executor (source Last Will and Testament of Annie Appleby) Annie is buried  in the Appleby Family grave.
