Francis NAY and Ann STEVENS

I have been unable to locate a birth or baptism record for Francis NAY, though it is possible he was a child of Lewis NAY and Esther MALLOTT who married in 1754 at St Matthew in Bethnal Green.  The support for this possibility is that a Lewis Nay was a witness at Francis Nay's marriage to  Ann STEVENS, which took place on 13 may 1778 at St Leonard Shorditch.  Both Francis and Ann were 'of this parish' and the witnesses were Thomas Stevens and Lewis Nay.  [a Lewis NAY was buried in 1818 at St Matthew Bethnal Green, aged 86 years].  I have not managed to locate burial records for either Francis or Ann.

Children of Francis and Ann NAY:

William Nay, b. 15 dec 1778, chr 27 dec 1778 at St Leonard's Shoreditch, son of Francis and Ann Nay of Newin Yard (this William must have died before 1791)

George Nay, b. 15 jul 1787, chr 5 aug 1787 at St Matthew Bethnal Green, son of Francis Nay, weaver and Ann

James Nay, b. 3 dec 1789, chr 26 dec 1789 at St Leonard's Shorditch, son of Francis and Ann Nay of George Yard

Ralph WAGGETT and Ophelia BUTTLE

Over the years, I have been in contact with  a number of people researching this couple and we have established that Ralph and Ophelia married in 1789 in Cork, Ireland.  It has been suggested that Ralph was born in about 1767 and was the eldest of at least four children of John and Ann WAGGETT of Cork [along with John Waggett, born about 1769, George Alexander Waggett, born about 1774 and Mary Waggett, born about 1777] - but this needs to be confirmed.

We do know that Ralph and Ophelia had at least one child in Ireland before moving to England, where three more children were born in Southampton, Hampshire and they then seemed to have moved to London's docklands where the rest of their children were born. We know that Ralph was a sailmaker, born in about 1767 in Cork and buried on 6 nov 1814 at St Mary Rotherhithe.  Ophelia was born about 1768 in Cork and buried on 22 jan 1832 at St Dunstan and All Saints.

Children of Ralph and Ophelia:

John Alexander Waggett, born about 1791 in Ireland.  John was a sailmaker and married Mary Ann KELL on 30 sep 1821 at Christchurch, City of London - we know of six children of this couple. John Alexander was a witness at the marriage of George Rogers Waggett.

George Rogers Waggett, chr 23 jan 1796 Southampton Holy Rood. George was also a sailmaker - he married Ann THOMPSON on 19 sep 1819 at St Mary Whitechapel and we know of seven children of this couple.

Thomas Waggett, chr 25 feb 1798 at Southampton St Michael - also a sailmaker.  From census info it seems Thomas married a Caroline and we know of two children.

Colwell Waggett, born 25 jun 1800 in Southampton and chr 20 July in the Southampton Wesleyan chapel.  Colwell became a shoemaker and married Mary Ann RATLIDGE on 29 aug 1822 in Whitechapel and they have five children.  Following Mary Ann's death in 1846, Colwell married Maria CHAPMAN in 1848 (no children of this marriage). Colwell diedon 27 Oct 1891 in Mile End Infirmary.

Samuel William Waggett - born in 1802 in Rotherhithe and died in 1804.

Stephen Alexander Waggett - born about 1805 and married to Elizabeth Sarah CLARK in 1831 in Hackney - we know of eight children.  Stephen was a shoemaker.

Ruth Amelia Waggett - born 1808 in Rotherhithe and married Thomas CRAVEN in 1855 in Shadwell.

Ophelia Waggett - born 1808 (she and Ruth Amelia were twins), and married to William SELBY in 1834 in Battersea.
